go My weight loss journey….
I have been overweight my whole life. Always the biggest of all my friends. I have been told
I would be so pretty if I just lost weight, bribed with new clothes if I lost weight, forced to
weigh every Friday in front of a parent and made to join Weight Watchers in high school. I did not date at all in high school and until the last 5 years, had one boyfriend my entire adult
life and that was in college. Which all makes up for a pretty unhealthy view of food, my body
and myself worth in general. I eat when I am happy, sad, embarrassed, bored, frustrated or
celebrating. I do not have to be hungry to eat. Although I was always overweight, we never
had sugared cereal at our house and only drank soda when we were camping. But we were a
big clear your plate and dessert family. I used to love babysitting…all the candy and junk food –
it was fat girl heaven!
Sometime after my 35 birthday my gynecologist said she had to do a blood test in order for
me to stay on the birth control pill. Guess what my cholesterol and triglycerides came back
high. So no more pill for me. It took me several years and the approach of my 40th birthday
to finally decide to do something about my weight. And it really started as a desire to lower
my cholesterol so I could go back on the pill than a desire to exercise and lose weight. But
ultimately that is what happened.
In January of 2009 I started tracking what I ate (generally, not exact measurements), when I
exercised and how much I weighed. I have continued pretty much continuously until this day.
When I was losing the weight, I was in the zone. I rarely cheated….I ate healthy almost all the
time. I started out walking and was soon running 2 miles. I worked out at home doing videos
after work. I told very few people what I was doing. But people started to notice! The baggy
clothes gave me away. Everyone wanted to know what I was doing….simple! Eat less, exercise more!!! My friends and I were going to Santa Barbara in June 2009 and I had a goal – which I
met. It was about a 35 pound loss. A couple girls knew I was losing weight but it was a surprise to the rest. In November we were going to Vegas and I had a goal to lose another 20 pounds. Again I met that goal.
The Vegas weight was the least I have ever weighed. I bought a very small, very tight pair of jeans (which I just gave away). After that trip I gained about 5 pounds and then another 5 and another. Pretty soon I was up 15-20 pounds depending on the week. And had to buy all new pants but a size bigger this time.
Enter go here Ultimate Body Boot Camp! In the summer of 2011 there was a Groupon. I bought one
because I needed to try something new to motivate me. Keep in mind, previous to this I had
exercised at home, by myself. No one to see me, critique or judge me. So I chose a spot in the corner where I couldn’t quite see myself in the mirror. And I loved it! I was getting up
at 5:50 AM during my summer vacation to EXERCISE! People who knew me were in shock! I
never missed a class. Richelle offered the right mix of energy, enthusiasm and foul language to
motivate me to push myself farther than I ever have before.
Due to a new job and schedule I had to take a couple months off. But I missed it and knew I
needed to find a way to make it back. So I joined the 6 PM class. Many days I leave work and
sit in the parking lot for 45 minutes waiting for class to start. Coming to boot camp is that
important to me. Over the last several months I have noticed many changes – I am stronger
and have greater cardiovascular ability. I can do box jumps! I could not do those before I
Richelle believes in me even when I don’t believe in myself. She is able to push just a little
to get more out of me, move me out of my comfort zone and show me I am a strong person.
Through the nutrition classes I am learning how to fuel my body. It is a slow process….I have
a whole lifetime of bad habits and issues to work through. I will admit, I have not lost a lot of
weight. This is a constant struggle for me. But I am not gaining anymore either. I am strong
and healthy and wouldn’t embarrass myself on a hike or walking up a flight of stairs.
I know I will always have a support system to turn to if I need help. Boot camp isn’t just about
the exercise. There are nutrition classes, Facebook updates, group runs and a bunch of people
who will know I am not in class! So I show up….and I am glad I do! I signed a year contract and
I am committed to showing up and giving it my all every class.
Some days I look in the mirror and I don’t recognize the person looking back at me. Who is
she? How did she become someone who can buy a medium shirt? I do know I don’t want to go
back to where I started….and Ultimate Body Boot Camp is there to help support me all the way!
